A Tuscan Wedding at Castello Il Palagio

Augusta and Stefano · Tuscany, Italy

Augusta and Stefano celebrated their wedding weekend at Castello Il Palagio, today called Castello Lapi, a medieval castle in the Chianti hills just outside Florence, with gardens that look out over vineyards and olive groves.

What a weekend this was. When I shared the first preview, I hadn’t even looked at one percent of the images, but I already knew we were in for a treat.

Getting Ready in the Castle

On the wedding day everyone got ready inside the castle, among old wooden furniture, paintings and stone walls. The light falls in through small windows and leaves the rest of the room in shadow, exactly the kind of light and shadow I love to work with.

Vows in the Garden of Castello Il Palagio

The ceremony took place in the garden, framed by stone pillars covered in peach and white flowers. A harpist played while the guests took their seats, shading themselves from the sun with white parasols, and Augusta walked down the aisle in a long lace veil.

After the vows the two of them walked back up the aisle in front of the old castle door, to a garden full of applause.

Golden Hour Under the Veil

As the sun went down behind the trees, we took a few quiet minutes for portraits, the two of them wrapped in Augusta’s veil with the evening light shining through the lace. Then it was back to the bridesmaids in sage green and the people they love most.

Orange and Green for the Party

Before the party started, Augusta and Stefano changed into matching outfits in bold orange and deep green. They came down the castle stairs with a colorful hand fan and a drink in hand, and the whole room danced with them. The tables were set with green floral china and folded fans in the same bright colors.
