Stunning Wedding at the Jnane Tamsna

Salma and Euros · Marrakech, Morocco

Salma and Euros got married on a Sunday afternoon in October at Jnane Tamsna, a garden estate in the Palmeraie on the edge of Marrakech. Their family and friends had travelled from across countries and continents for three days of celebrations: a welcome mehndi on Saturday evening, the wedding on Sunday and a farewell barbecue by the pool on Monday.

Jnane Tamsna is a place I could photograph for days. Ochre walls, keyhole arches, carved wooden doors, olive trees and white bougainvillea wherever you look, and light that changes with every corner you turn.

Getting Ready in the Moroccan Light

Their welcome card opened with Marhaba! Croeso! Welcome!, in Arabic, Welsh and English, and the programme for the weekend sat right next to it.

Euros got ready in one of the estate’s salons, on carved wooden sofas with the garden right outside the open doors, while Salma was helped into her dress before stepping out onto a narrow ochre staircase, her veil falling down the steps.

Vows in the Yellow Courtyard at Jnane Tamsna

At four o’clock the guests took their seats in a long yellow courtyard of keyhole arches, iron lanterns and red Moroccan rugs, with urns of peach and white roses at the far end of the aisle. Euros walked down the aisle first, to a round of applause, and waited for Salma in front of the carved wooden doors.

Euros read his vows from a small notebook, and afterwards the two of them walked back up the aisle through a shower of white petals.

Cocktails and Portraits Among the Arches

Cocktail hour moved into the garden, with green lounge sofas under the white bougainvillea and a violinist playing between the guests. Meanwhile Salma, Euros and I slipped away for portraits through the arches, under the palms and into a quiet courtyard of olive trees, just as the lanterns started to glow.

After that it was time for dinner, speeches and dancing under the stars.

A Garden Estate in the Palmeraie

Jnane Tamsna was created by the designer Meryanne Loum-Martin and her husband, the ethnobotanist Gary Martin. Its rooms are spread across several houses in walled organic gardens, and everywhere you go there is another arch, stairway or doorway opening onto palms, olive trees and bougainvillea. Between the portraits I couldn’t stop photographing the place itself.
