Lukas Piatek · Iceland elopements
Memories as vivid as the experience itself.
If you’re thinking about an elopement in Iceland, that’s where I come in. I have an eye for the honest moments that make your day yours, set against backdrops that only Iceland can offer. From the soft glow of dawn to the warmth of your shared smiles, my photos are about the real, tangible feel of your elopement. And I got married in Iceland myself, so I know it from both sides.

How it works
Your elopement day, step by step
- 01
We plan it together
Tell me what you dream of: waterfalls, black sand, canyons or a spot nobody knows. I suggest places away from the crowds and the right time of day for them.
- 02
I arrive a day or two early
We get to know each other, plan everything and even scout the locations together.
- 03
I pick you up
If you like, I’m also your driver for the day. I pick you up from your accommodation and take you between locations, so you can relax and take in the views. And yes, there will be treats.
- 04
You say your vows
Almost anywhere in nature, with an authorised officiant and two witnesses. Protected places like Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey or Arnarstapi need an event permit, which can take up to 15 working days.
- 05
We chase the light
In summer the sun barely sets, so we photograph late into the evening, when the crowds are gone and Iceland feels like it’s all yours.
Elopements in Iceland
Just the two of you, and Iceland
Couples I’ve had the pleasure of photographing in Iceland. If you feel a connection, message me, and let’s talk about how to capture your elopement in a way that’s true to you.

Seasons
When to elope in Iceland

June to August
Summer
Mild weather, long days and lupines in full bloom in June and July. It’s also peak season, so the famous spots get crowded and prices go up. My tip: the sun barely sets, so we photograph late in the evening and have Iceland almost to ourselves.

December to March
Winter
Only four to five hours of daylight, but the low sun bathes everything in a golden glow that lasts all day. Snow, ice around the big waterfalls, fewer people, lower prices and a chance of northern lights. It can get cold, mostly because of the wind.

The wild card seasons
Spring and fall
Anything can happen: sunshine and snowstorms within hours of each other. Spring has fewer tourists, and I’ve seen the northern lights dancing as early as September. Just be ready for wind.
Locations
My favourite places to elope
Iceland is full of breathtaking spots. In the end it comes down to the experience you’re after: famous and spectacular, or quiet and all yours.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Stunning, especially at sunrise, but a magnet for tourists, very windy and known for dangerous freak waves. Perfect for part of your photos; I would think twice about having the ceremony here.

Skógafoss
My all-time favourite waterfall, and on a sunny day often wrapped in a rainbow. It roars, so it’s better for photos than for hearing each other’s vows.

Kvernufoss
A short walk from Skógafoss and far less crowded. There’s a path and a parking fee now, but it kept its rugged charm, and a little climb rewards you with a phenomenal view from the top.

Arbaejarfoss
A secluded gem near Hella that I discovered during an elopement: not a single tourist in sight, and a gentle waterfall, so everyone hears your vows crystal clear.

Nauthúsagil Cave
A bumpy detour next to Seljalandsfoss leads to a cave that feels like another world. Bring waterproof boots, and you will likely have it all to yourselves.

Stone Bridge and Búðir
On the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, easy to reach even for guests who can’t walk far, with the famous black church of Búðir close by.

Questions
Permits, paperwork and more
What do we need to get legally married in Iceland?
You both need to be 18 or older. You’ll need your birth certificates, a certificate of marital status from your home country (not older than 12 weeks), notarised copies of your passports and the marriage notification form, signed by two witnesses. Send everything to the District Commissioner about three to four weeks before your ceremony. My Iceland guide has the full list, the fees and the links.
Do we need a permit for our ceremony spot?
You can get married almost anywhere in nature. In protected areas and national parks, like Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey or the coast at Arnarstapi, a wedding needs an event permit from island.is, which can take up to 15 working days. On private land you need the landowner’s permission.
Who should handle the paperwork?
I recommend a local wedding planner who takes care of it for a small fee. That’s how we did it for our own wedding: I was too afraid of making a mistake and got help from Pink Iceland. You’ll find the planners I recommend in my guide.
Can we bring family and friends?
Absolutely. Our own wedding in Iceland was just us and our closest family and friends in a little canyon off the road, and you need two witnesses at the ceremony anyway.
How much does it cost to elope in Iceland?
There’s no single answer, because it depends on what your elopement should look like. The better question is how much you want to spend to make it unforgettable. Either way, an elopement is almost always cheaper than a traditional wedding. My Iceland packages start at €5,000.
