A Spring Wedding at The Foundry, Long Island City

Catie and Ben · Long Island City, New York

Catie and Ben got married on a Friday evening in May, in the ivy-covered courtyard of The Foundry in Long Island City (LIC). I had already met the two of them for their engagement shoot in Greenwich Village, so we knew each other well by the time the big day came.

The Foundry is a restored 19th-century metal foundry just across the East River from Manhattan, and it has everything I love about New York: old brick, steel, lots of greenery and that mix of raw industrial charm and soft, romantic light.

Sage Green and Spring Flowers

Their wedding weekend started with welcome drinks in Brooklyn on Thursday and ended with brunch in Long Island City on Saturday. In between was a black tie optional Friday with a spring palette from the very first detail: a sage green invitation suite, bridesmaids in sage satin and bouquets full of peach, pink and yellow flowers.

On a rooftop garden with the Manhattan skyline in the distance, we took portraits of Catie with her bridesmaids and her family, and a few quiet moments of the two of them.

Vows in the Ivy Courtyard at The Foundry

At six o’clock the guests took their seats in the courtyard, between old brick walls covered in ivy and strings of lights. Ben walked down the aisle arm in arm with his family, and after the vows the two of them walked back up the aisle to a courtyard full of applause. Cocktail hour stayed right there among the ivy, with plenty of laughter and the flower girl in the middle of it all.

Dinner at The Foundry, Under the Queensboro Bridge

Dinner was set at long tables in the courtyard, with bud vases of spring flowers, candles and the Queensboro Bridge rising behind the ivy. Inside, the exposed brick and steel railings of the old foundry were the perfect backdrop for a few more portraits of the newlyweds.

Catie and Ben’s Engagement Session

Before the wedding, Catie, Ben and I took a walk through Greenwich Village: quiet tree-lined streets off MacDougal Street, a cobblestone mews, ivy-covered houses and a crosswalk in front of White Oak Tavern.

The courtyard can be covered with a standby tent. It is booked about three months ahead with a non-refundable deposit of one third, and the final call is made 48 hours before the wedding. All indoor spaces have heating and air conditioning.
